Cooking With Wine – Wine Gums
A new way of cooking with wine
Welcome to our blog series on cooking with wine in which we continue our culinary adventure with a recipe for our Wine Gums. This super-quick, sweet and delicious treats are perfect for snacking on at home or when you’re out!
Before we begin, there’s one thing that we find really handy and that’s to know a few things up front. First, how long will it take to prep, cook, set aside, refrigerate, etc. before it’s ready to eat? Second, how many people will it serve? Lastly, the grocery list.
Nice to know details
As a general rule, allow for:
- 3 minutes preparation
- 3 minutes cooking
- 2 to 3 hours in fridge or 15 minutes in freezer
- Servings depends on the size of your molds
- Unflavoured powdered gelatin pouches (6)
- Granulated white sugar (1/2 cup)
- Silicone chocolate molds
Prepare the filling
- Pour 1 cup of Orchard Breezin’ fruit wine into a small saucepan
- Add 5 pouches of unflavoured powdered gelatin
- Measure 1/2 cup of granulated white sugar into the saucepan
- Whisk to dissolve all ingredients
- Cook over medium low heat 2 to 3 minutes
- Pour into silicone chocolate molds
- Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours or freeze for 15 minutes
- Turn the chocolate mold away from you
- Press your finger on the bottom of each compartment to release the wine gum
- Arrange on a plate or store at room temperature in a plastic bag
We recommend serving these delicious treats with the remaining wine. It’s always best to serve the same wine used during cooking. This always helps to enhance both the flavours in the dish and also the wine.
- You can use a red wine, white wine, rosé wine or dessert wine
- If you want a more jiggly result, use 3 pouches of unflavoured gelatin
- For a stronger wine flavour, use 2 cups of wine and reduce one cup over heat by half
- To add a little more flavour, you can add a 1-3 teaspoons of lemon juice to taste
- Make 3 batches with different wines (white, rosé and red) and therefore have a delicious variety
- It’s best not to use golden or brown sugar or demerara sugar so you get the true, vibrant colours
- We’ve also used other types of molds but the silicone chocolate molds produce the best results
