Your winemaking team…
Paul has been with Steveston Winemakers since 2001. He began his career as a professional photographer while living on Canada’s east coast. His friendly nature makes you feel so welcome that you already feel like family when you first walk into the store. He has a wealth of knowledge about our wines and after a few quick questions, will be able to help you decide which ones to make. When you start the fermentation process for your first kit, you become a vintner. Paul will call you when it’s ready to bottle and help you turn it into the finished product to take home.
Doug has been part of the Steveston Winemakers team since 2006 He spent 20 years of his career at the Vancouver Aquarium. A professional diver and photographer for 36 years, he is still actively involved in the diving community, managing the Biological Monitoring Programs for artificial reefs. He’s also been associate editor of a diving magazine. What does all this have to do with wine? Doug is intimately familiar with the more scientific (biological) stages of the wine-making process. He meticulously takes care of your wine from the time you start the fermentation process until you come back to bottle it.
Alfonso joined Steveston Winemakers in September 2018. Prior to that, he spent 2 years in customer service in Steveston. He participates in a wide variety of volunteer work by helping the disabled, injured, seniors, sports teams and the underprivileged. He’s quickly learning the wine production process as Doug’s apprentice. A true community spirit, he is a great fit for both the front and the back of the shop and the Steveston Winemakers Culture of Community Giving. He is also taking the Sociology program at UBC.
Egon has been with Steveston Winemakers since 2012 He began his career in IT sales around the time when computers came to be. Of German heritage, he has published a cookbook of his favourite family recipes that also includes some personal stories about his life. Egon takes pride in volunteering for local community groups and is a member of his strata council. He knows our wine kits very well and has easily transitioned from IT to wine sales, taking care to learn exactly what our customers like. He’s can offer a wealth of advice on food pairings as well.
Bill and Heather have been customers of Steveston Winemakers since moving here in 2001. When the former owners decided to retire, to be sure they could continue to make the outstanding wines they’d become accustomed to, they bought the business. Bill began his career as a computer programmer in the financial industry, eventually becoming Chief Technology Officer and later doing IT consulting projects in healthcare. Volunteering has been an important part of his life, having spent 13 years with Scouts Canada and 17 with the RCMP Block Watch program. Being process oriented, he’s making sure everything behind the scenes is working smoothly. His last name means ‘merchant’ in Dutch and wanting to have more involvement in the community, the wine shop is a great fit.
Always drawn to Steveston Heather was thrilled when she and Bill could call it home in 2001. She began her career in accounting and transitioned to IT projects, auditing, business risk consulting, business continuity, privacy, compliance and risk management. All of these skills can be used in the business. Volunteering has been a big part of her life, including United Way, parent advisory council, strata council, CPA chapter board, Girl Guides, occupational health and safety and the RCMP Block Watch program. Heather is delighted to be even more involved in the community since becoming a shop owner.
